Play Free: 33 Devotions for Athletes and Coaches: Identity in Christ, on and off the field (Dwelling in The Word)

Do you compete hard — but carry the weight of performance, comparison, and fear of failure everywhere you go?
You work hard. You show up. You chase the goal, the scholarship, the selection, the personal best. But deep down, the pressure to perform feels relentless — endless comparison, “what if” questions, and the fear that your value drops with every missed shot, poor race, or bad training session.
What if your identity had nothing to do with the scoreboard?
Play Free is a 33-day devotional for athletes, coaches, and driven competitors who want to perform at their best — not from pressure, but from freedom. Rooted in Scripture and written for the real pressures of sport, it invites you into a stronger, freer truth: your identity is in Jesus Christ, not your achievements.
What changes over 33 days:
• You stop competing from fear and start competing from faith
• Perfectionism loses its hold as grace takes its place
• You find clarity on who you are when the result does not go your way
• You build the kind of resilient character that performs under pressure and holds up off the field
Each day includes:
• A KJV Scripture passage relevant to the athlete’s real experience
• An honest, practical reflection on performance, identity, and faith
• A short guided prayer for before training, competition, or a hard day
• A faith challenge to carry into your sport that day
This book is for:
• Christian athletes at any level — school, college, amateur, or professional
• Coaches looking for a faith-based resource to share with their team
• Parents wanting to support a young athlete struggling with pressure or burnout
• Anyone driven by achievement who has started to wonder if there is a freer way to live
Perfect as a gift for:
A team captain · A graduating senior athlete · Christmas · A birthday · A coach appreciation gift · A sports awards ceremony · Anyone returning from injury or a career setback
Play Free is Book 2 of the Dwelling in The Word series by Robert W. Locke MBE. Each book stands alone and can be read in any order.
Train your body. Train your heart. Play free.
