George Whitefield (1714–1770) preached the Holy Spirit not as a distant doctrine but as an immediate and urgent reality. He believed that no sermon could convert, no prayer could avail, and no church could revive unless the Spirit of God was present and active—and he said so plainly, from fields and platforms and borrowed pulpits, to crowds that numbered in the tens of thousands.

This volume collects five of his sermons on the person and work of the Holy Spirit: the Spirit as the common inheritance of every true believer; the Spirit’s convicting work in the conscience; the marks by which a believer may know the Spirit has been received; the body of the Christian as a temple of God; and the resurrection power of Christ as the foundation of the Christian life.

Taken together, these sermons answer a question Whitefield’s age asked nervously and ours often avoids entirely: what does the Holy Spirit actually do, and how does a person know He is present? Whitefield answered with Scripture, with argument, and with the urgency of a man who had seen the Spirit move entire populations to tears and repentance.
